Let’s stop fumbling around grief in the workplace
You’ve got a wellbeing policy. Mental health support. Maybe even a menopause champion. But what happens when grief walks through the office doors?
Isn’t it time we all felt more comfortable than saying a well intentioned “sorry for your loss” at the water cooler that comes across all…. well…. wrong?
Grief, loss and bereavement are the ONE thing we’re ALL guaranteed to encounter - and yet it’s the one thing none of us are equipped to deal with (if it happens to us, a loved one or a colleague)
In fact, one in four of the UK adult working population will experience a bereavement in a 12 month period, and yet over 80% of us agree that we’re not comfortable knowing what to say or do around grief.
That’s 34 million people going unsupported, feeling isolated and being left to deal with their loss on their own.

Why run grief education sessions
Staff retention
When your employee comes back to work after a significant loss and doesn’t receive the level of support they need, over half of them will find a new job within a year. Reduce absenteeism, presenteeism and mental health challenges by having support measures in place.
Skills
We’re simply not taught how to ‘do’ grief. How to deal with it ourselves or how to hold space for someone else who is grieving. The skills and tools you learn in the Grief Education Session will be used time and again because in this life, death is the only inevitable.
Future proofing your policy
Bereavement is more than a policy. There are human beings behind the feelings, the loss and coping mechanisms. By offering your employee the compassion they so very need, you’re future proofing your team. You’re demonstrating that this is more than a tick box exercise. That you actually care.
FAQs
-
There are a couple of potential solutions to that.
We can run the session online so more people are able to join from where ever they are.
Or, we can run more than one session to accommodate different time zones.
-
Each session is tailored to the company’s specific needs, however, I generally tend to cover the following:
what grief is
the neuroscience of grief
how grief shows up in the workplace
what to say / what not to say
implementing a support plan, short & long term
If there is anything specific or you’d like to a deeper dive on anything then let’s chat that through, or consider a second session to go through more details as a follow up.
-
Don’t worry! Your teams aren’t going to come away from the session feeling depressed or emotional.
In fact, they’ll feel empowered and more confident, happier in the knowledge they’ve been equipped with tools, phrases and useful guidance to take into the workplace and their lives.
