Let’s stop fumbling around grief in the workplace

You’ve got a wellbeing policy. Mental health support. Maybe even a menopause champion. But what happens when grief walks through the office doors?

Isn’t it time we all felt more comfortable than saying a well intentioned “sorry for your loss” at the water cooler that comes across all…. well…. wrong?

Grief, loss and bereavement are the ONE thing we’re ALL guaranteed to encounter - and yet it’s the one thing none of us are equipped to deal with (if it happens to us, a loved one or a colleague)

In fact, one in four of the UK adult working population will experience a bereavement in a 12 month period, and yet over 80% of us agree that we’re not comfortable knowing what to say or do around grief.

That’s 34 million people going unsupported, feeling isolated and being left to deal with their loss on their own.

Why run grief education sessions

Staff retention

When your employee comes back to work after a significant loss and doesn’t receive the level of support they need, over half of them will find a new job within a year. Reduce absenteeism, presenteeism and mental health challenges by having support measures in place.

Skills

We’re simply not taught how to ‘do’ grief. How to deal with it ourselves or how to hold space for someone else who is grieving. The skills and tools you learn in the Grief Education Session will be used time and again because in this life, death is the only inevitable.

Future proofing your policy

Bereavement is more than a policy. There are human beings behind the feelings, the loss and coping mechanisms. By offering your employee the compassion they so very need, you’re future proofing your team. You’re demonstrating that this is more than a tick box exercise. That you actually care.

FAQs

  • There are a couple of potential solutions to that.

We can run the session online so more people are able to join from where ever they are.

Or, we can run more than one session to accommodate different time zones.

  • Each session is tailored to the company’s specific needs, however, I generally tend to cover the following:

    • what grief is

    • the neuroscience of grief

    • how grief shows up in the workplace

    • what to say / what not to say

    • implementing a support plan, short & long term

If there is anything specific or you’d like to a deeper dive on anything then let’s chat that through, or consider a second session to go through more details as a follow up.

  • Don’t worry! Your teams aren’t going to come away from the session feeling depressed or emotional.

In fact, they’ll feel empowered and more confident, happier in the knowledge they’ve been equipped with tools, phrases and useful guidance to take into the workplace and their lives.

  • "I feel like I’m on a path now to living my life on my own terms, creating the life I want to live and taking no sh*t from the ‘system’. Lou’s combination of gentle holding, plus the no bs approach when she lovingly calls me out on the stories that I have allowed to rule my life and my decisions is EXACTLY what I needed in my life. And will continue to benefit from. So grateful for you, Lou."

    Laura L

  • "Working with Lou was the most rewarding, enlightening, fun, challenging (in a good way!) and fulfilling experience. I gained such a clear perspective on myself and where I wanted to go and the tools Lou provided are continuing to help day to day."

    Rachel W

  • "With Lou’s help I untangled the expectations and responsibilities which weighed me down, figuring out what truly mattered to me and what was simply a drain on my well-being. In moments of absolute chaos she helped me find perspective, and kept me on track. My (work)life is infinitely better having been through coaching with Lou."

    Alex W

  • "Working with Lou made me realise a mindset change was needed. The questions Lou asked really made me examine and analyse thoughts, decisions and fears from a completely different angle; her challenges made me re-consider things or confirmed that I should stick to some of my convictions. If anyone is considering working with Lou they should absolutely go for it."

    Dominique J

  • "The most insightful part of Lou's Clarity Quest Program, for me, came via the hypnosis sessions. They helped me identify and then step over the barriers that I was creating for myself, positively impacting my home life as well as my subsequent career direction. I now feel re-energised, confident in a much more purposeful job search, and calm. I have never truly been calm before."
